Job Purpose:
The Outpatient Phlebotomy Supervisor is responsible for the day-to-day operations and management of a wide range of complex functions in a manner that effectively supports the efficient operation of the Department.
Job - Specific Duties and Responsibilities:
- Knows and utilizes HR policies and procedures. Consistently utilizes HRO behaviors and skills.
- Effectively manages sick time, lateness, and overtime; disciplines appropriately as needed
- Effectively manages staff to maintain service requirements of the department and works effectively and cooperatively with the Laboratory Client Services/Phlebotomy Manager and other managers to meet the entire laboratory department scheduling needs
- Accelerates performance of staff with effective coaching and mentoring; seeks to develop employees in new skills including management tasks
- Delegates effectively to staff to ensure the efficient operation of the department and to meet department goals
- Adequately documents any problems with employees and submits appropriate documentation to the Laboratory Client Services/Phlebotomy Manager. Counsels personnel appropriately throughout the year as needed when performance fails to meet acceptable standards. Will maintain appropriate documentation of all initial training and repeat training.
- Ensures that all employees are accurately trained in all areas of the department, including but not limited to, phlebotomy, computer programs, test procedures, quality control procedures and safety procedures by completing annual review training evaluations on each employee. Annual review training evaluations must be completed within 12 months of the previous evaluation.
- Ensures that no staff is allowed to perform a procedure until there is a completed orientation training checklist on file.
- Keeps current on the latest technology in areas of responsibility
- Meets annual continuing education requirements; completes competency requirements each calendar year for duties performed.
- Communicates effectively with key constituents; effectively communicate priorities and expectations to peers and subordinates
- Maintains a good working relationship with all fellow employees both within the department and from other departments. Actively seeks to improve relations as needed; manages conflict effectively while maintaining a calm demeanor.
- Consistently demonstrates “ownership” of their area of operations by consistently responding to adverse operation situations and providing effective leadership through the resolution.
- Demonstrates good organizational skills and ability to multitask; organizes personal work space so that there is a neat appearance and needed information is readily retrievable.- Develops and maintains focus on priorities; establishes workplans for priorities and evaluates performance against priorities
- Effectively manages shift changes within the department to ensure a smooth transition. Ensures there is appropriate communication between shifts.
- Builds productive and collaborative teams
- Participates daily in the team effort to ensure that all required department work is efficiently completed within the appropriate time interval; is available to coworkers
- Works weekends, holidays, and off-shifts as assigned or needed.
- Shares information; helps other staff learn and learns from other staff
- Effectively leads change; demonstrates support for CHA initiatives and operationalizes needed strategic changes
- Constructively analyzes work processes and contributes to the team to improve workflow as needed. Initiates and identifies opportunities for improvement and provides a leadership role to the team in the improvement process; thinks creatively, outside the box.
- Effectively problem solves; utilizes systems thinking when approaching a problem and when planning improvements
- Demonstrates leadership skills by independently organizing and managing special projects for the department.
- Takes appropriate action whenever opportunities for improvement are identified.
- Ensures that all appropriate occurrences are documented completely and correctly utilizing the CHA SERS reporting system. Provides effective investigation of all incidents with appropriate corrective action defined and implemented in a timely manner.

Qualifications/Requirements
Education/Training:
Minimum of HS diploma required.
Certifications:
Phlebotomy certification preferred.
ASCP certificate preferred
Specimen Transport certification preferred.
Work Experience: Minimum of 5 years of phlebotomy experience and specimen processing experience including specimen transport.
