DEPARTMENT DESCRIPTION:
CHA has an expert orthopedics team that understands bones, muscles, and joints. Our services range from injury evaluation to complex surgery, depending on your specific health needs. We believe that our team provides care that meets or exceeds that found in most other Boston-area hospitals. And, as part of a regional healthcare system, we see patients at three convenient Boston-area locations: CHA Assembly Square, Cambridge Hospital, and the CHA Malden Care Center.
Summary:
• Under the direction and supervision of the Registered Nurse, the Licensed Practical Nurse and the Provider, provides patient centered care on stable patient populations and treatment of orthopedic patients, including casting, bracing.
Responsibilities:
• Assists Provider/Nursing with patient care and rooming of clinic patients; properly fits and applies preoperative braces, crutches, and other soft goods; assists in preparation for and application of casts and orthopedic appliances; changes dressings; removes sutures, casts, and splints.
• Assists Providers and nurses with orthopedic procedures, including procedures, including wound care, aspirations, minor surgical procedures, fractured reductions, etc.; instructs patients in cast and traction care and the use of orthopedic appliances.
• Maintains clean and well-stocked cast and soft goods room; orders special supplies and/or equipment.
• Coordinated data collection resources for the clinic information systems.
• Remains current with orthopedic trends, care and supplies; performs other duties as assigned.
• Basic knowledge of MS Office Software, including Excel and Word.
• Maintains strict confidentiality and professionalism in all communications with physicians, patients, staff and professional contacts.

• Must be able to exercise initiative, judgment, discretion, and decision making skills to achieve organizational objectives.

• Ability to articulate descriptions of orthopedic conditions based upon a basic understanding of anatomical structures and their relationship with one another.
• Ability to apply and remove upper and lower extremity casts.
• Understanding of theory and application of skin and skeletal fraction.
• Understanding of the proper application of aseptic techniques in dressing change and in setting up surgical fields.
• Understand and establish policy and procedure directives.
• Other duties as required.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

• Certifications:
Maintains current Basic Life Support “C” certification, Certification from Accredited Institution for Orthopedic Professionals Required
• Work Experience:
A minimum of 1 year of Ambulatory Orthopedic Clinic experience required.
• Linguistic Capabilities:
Knowledge of a second language preferred.
