Department Description:
Patient transport staff are the glue that holds our healthcare system together, ensuring patients get to their destinations within our hospitals and helping maintain an excellent patient experience. Job Summary:
The Transporter assumes total responsibility for patients' welfare to and from various areas of the hospital by either wheelchair or liter. Under supervision, the person in this role provides safe, competent, and efficient transportation of patients across all areas and departments including X-ray, Ultrasound, Nuclear Medicine, Electrocardiogram, Outpatient Lab, EEG/EMG, Stress Lab, Vascular Lab, Emergency Department, PACU, Outpatient Clinic, Admitting, Morgue, Respiratory Therapy, Physical Therapy, ICU, Cast Room, Physician’s Offices and all patient floors.
Responsibilities:
Using precaution and employing necessary basic principles of body mechanics, the Transporter transfers patients to and from their bed or chair to a wheelchair or liter. During transport, they are responsible for transferring all IV bottles to and from the chair or liter, as well as observing the IV flow and reporting any malfunctions to the nurse manager or the IV team. The Transporter crucially checks oxygen tanks daily to ensure that tanks are full for the shift, and contacts the Respiratory Department for replacement tanks as needed. In addition, they work with the on-shift nurse or respiratory technician to arrange the patient's oxygen to and from the wall receptacle and portable oxygen tanks, monitor oxygen flow, and report any abnormalities. They also ensure that patients’ foley tube, chest tubes, and containers are properly placed on the liter, bed or wheelchair. In the event of any emergency while transporting a patient, they take proper steps in getting the patient to proper help immediately.
Qualifications:
High school GED
Work Experience preferred, but not required
